Camden Feed and Seed was owned for a couple of generations by the Sheheen family. I went to school with the brothers and cousins and their family store was located on South Broad Street in Camden. I remember as a little boy my grandparents taking me there at easter for a couple of chicks or a duck which, living in the country, we raised fo fowl adulthood until, I am sure, at some point they wound up on the Sunday dinner table. Some years ago, I don't know when exactly, Sheheen's Feed and Seed moved to the fringes of the downtown Camden area. I'm not sure just how much agriculture is actually practiced around Camden now, but the big-box stores moved in. K-Mart, Wal-Mart, and the Lowes finally pushed Sheheens out of business. I'm sure that there is probably a Tractor Supply just up I-20. I try to support the small local merchants as much as I possibly can, but this seems to be a losing battle. I grew up knowing most of the local storekeepers in Camden, but when was the last time you went into a Wal-Mart and was greeted by name?
