Beaulah Methodist Church
September 1, 2006
This cross is in the yard of the Beaulah Methodist Church just outside of Camden, South Carolina. In The background can be seen a flag and a monument on a mass grave containing between 50 and 60 victims of a fire which occured at the local Cleveland School in May of 1923. No one seems to know for sure just how many are buried in this grave. The fire began when a kerosene lamp fell onto the stage during an evening school play resulting in a final death toll of 77. Victims ranged in age from 1 to 64. In the aftermath of the fire the Amaerican Red Cross provided finanancial assistance to the families for the first recorded time. More information about the Cleveland School fire can be found
here.
As a personal aside, my step-father and baby brother are buried in another section of this cemetery.
